Delhi, the capital of India is the perfect blend of past and present vividly. It is said that the city was founded by the Pandavas (hero’s of the Indian holy book, Mahabharata) in the 1200 BC. The city has seen the rise and fall of many dynasties. . The city is divided into main two parts –old Delhi and new Delhi. The old Delhi glitters with many historical monuments and temples while the new Delhi is more spacious and orderly. It was planned by the British architects and planners in the early 20th century when the capital was moved from Calcutta.
Attractions of Delhi :
Jama Masjid : Jama Masjid is the India’s largest mosque built by Shah Jahan in 1656. The mosque stands opposite opposite the Red Fort and is the eloquent reminder of the Mughal religious fervor. The onion shaped dome and the two minarets provides the magnificent example of the Mughal architecture. Visitors must take off their shoes before entering and the mosque ad cover their head with the scarf or cap.
Humayun’s Tomb : Situated near the Purana Quila, Humayun Tomb is the beautiful architecture piece. It was built by Haji Begum, wife of the second Mughal Emperor Humayun in the mid of the 16th century. It displays the perfect Mughal style with high arches and double domes.
Qutab Minar : Qutab Minar is a commemorative tower built by Allauddin Khilji in the 13th century. Qutab Minar the 239ft sandstone tower is an indo-islamic architectural wonder of ancient India. It is five stories high, each story clearly distinguished by a projecting balcony. The Qutab Minar is listed as a UNESCO world heritage.
Red Fort : The most popular Red Fort stands on the western bank of the river Yamuna. This royal residence was built by the Emperor Shah Jahan. The fort provides the magnificent view to the visitors when it glitters with eye catching electric lights. The fort houses the Diwan-i-amor the hall of public audiences where the emperor would sit and here the complaint of the common folks. The other attractions enclosed within this monuments are the hammams or the Royal Baths, the shahi Burj which used to be shahjahans working area, and the moti masjid or the pearl mosque built by Aurangzeb for his personal use.
Jantar Mantar : The observatory Jantar Mantar, was built by the Raja Jai Singh of Jaipur. Jantar Mantar is one of the world’s oldest astronomical observatories monument. This monument gives a deep insight into the technological innovations of the time and is an integral part of India’s scientific heritage.
Janpath, Delhi hatt and Chandni Chowk : Janpath , Delhi Hatt are the best place to shop the handicrafts items. The variety is incredible and there are items in all prices. While making a visit to the Delhi Hatt visitors get the good opportunity to enjoy the sound and light show in the evening. Chandni Chowk is a vibrant, throbbing, shriekingly loud and colourful shopping area amidst narrow cobbled lanes. It is the popular wholesale market famous for the saris and jewelery.
